9 LIGHTERS

“IF YOU PLAY WITH FIRE YOU ARE GOING TO GET BURNT”
Fire was tamed around 3-600.000 years ago by Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. With fire they were able to cook their food making it easier to digest and take in more calories. More calorie intake led to their brains getting bigger, eventually evolving to the human brain.
Before electricity fire was one of the most important things in a household. In Icelandic homes there was always a person responsible for the fire, keeping it alive. If the fire went out that person had to run to the nearest farm to fetch fire. Now a days we are not as reliant on fire as we were before electricity.
It wasn’t until the 1820’s that the lighter was invented. It is mostly associated with smoking which, at most times, starts as a social activity. In late 1960’s holding a lighter up in the air at concerts became a peace symbol, uniting people and bringing them together.
That is why I started exploring lighting a fire as a social event. With some of the objects it is hard or impossible to make fire alone which encourages you to interact with people and bring them together in order to create fire.
